PHASE 8 OF 9

Land & settle

Anmeldung, bank, university, and the part nobody prepares you for: not being lonely.

What to expect

  • First-week admin: Anmeldung (address registration), bank account, university enrolment, insurance.
  • It feels overwhelming for everyone for the first month. That's normal.
  • Friendships and routine are what make or break the experience, invest in them deliberately.

The real difficulties

  • !Loneliness and culture shock peak around months 1–3.
  • !Anmeldung appointments and paperwork can be slow and confusing.

Best practices

  • Do Anmeldung in week one, almost everything else depends on it.
  • Join your uni's Indian/international society AND one local hobby group, don't only stick to one crowd.
  • Say yes early and often; reach out first. Everyone there is also new.

What a paid agent would do here

  • Goes quiet once you've paid and landed. Few agents have ever lived in Germany.
  • Hands you a generic PDF as 'settling-in support'.

The truth: Real settling help comes from someone actually living in your city, not a head office in India.

Reflect & journal

Take a quiet minute. There are no wrong answers, this is just for you.

  • How will you deliberately build a social life in month one?
  • Who will you call on a hard day?
